Privacy Policy
What stays on your device, what leaves it, and why each permission exists.
Applies to BeatLevels for Android (com.emagombe.beatlevels), all versions from 1.7.2.
The short version
BeatLevels does not collect, transmit, store or sell any personal data. Your music library never leaves your device. There are no analytics, no advertising, no tracking and no accounts.
The only network use this app has is the Google Play purchase of the Pro unlock. Listening never needs a connection — before or after buying.
What stays on your device
Everything the app knows about you is on the phone and nowhere else:
- Your music files and their tags, read from Android’s media library.
- Playlists, favourites, hidden tracks, play history and play counts, stored in the app’s own private files.
- Equalizer and effect settings, and any presets you save, likewise.
- Where you were in a track when you last stopped, so playback resumes.
- Files you open from another app and — when the file cannot be read where it sits — a copy of it in the app’s own cache.
None of this is uploaded anywhere. It is not readable by other apps. If you uninstall BeatLevels, Android deletes it with the app.
Opening a file from a file manager, a download or an attachment uses the access that app granted for that one file — nothing else on your device becomes readable. If the file cannot be played where it sits, BeatLevels copies it into its own cache to play it; copies older than a day are deleted the next time you open a file this way, and clearing the app’s cache removes them at once.
If you have Android’s own backup turned on, your settings and playlists may be included in your Google account backup, like any other app’s data. That backup is between you and Google; BeatLevels neither reads it nor receives it. You can turn it off in your device’s system settings.
The one time the network is used
Buying the Pro unlock goes through Google Play Billing. That transaction is handled entirely by Google: BeatLevels never sees your name, your e-mail, your payment details or your address. What the app receives back is a yes-or-no answer about whether this Google account owns the unlock, plus a purchase token it uses to confirm delivery to Google.
The app checks that answer when it starts. If there is no connection it simply keeps the answer it already had — listening to music never requires a network connection, before or after buying.
Because the billing library is included, the app declares the INTERNET and ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE permissions. They are used for this and nothing else.
Permissions, and why each one exists
- READ_MEDIA_AUDIOREAD_EXTERNAL_STORAGE
- To find and play the music on your device. Optional, and never asked for on launch: the welcome screen offers to add individual folders instead, which needs no permission at all, and BeatLevels only asks for this one if you choose “Allow access to all music”.
- READ_MEDIA_VIDEO
- Only if you turn on “Include videos” in Settings, to play the audio track of video files. Requested on demand.
- READ_MEDIA_IMAGES (the photo permission) is not declared. On Android 12L and below, a cover image sitting next to an audio file is read under the storage permission above; from Android 13 that fallback is simply not used. Album art embedded in the file needs no permission on any version.
- WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE
- Only when you save edited tags, on versions of Android with no other way to write.
- POST_NOTIFICATIONSFOREGROUND_SERVICEFOREGROUND_SERVICE_MEDIA_PLAYBACKWAKE_LOCK
- To keep playing with the screen off and show playback controls.
- MODIFY_AUDIO_SETTINGS
- For the equalizer and effects.
- INTERNETACCESS_NETWORK_STATEcom.android.vending.BILLING
- Merged in by the Google Play billing library, for the purchase described above. They are used for that and nothing else.
BeatLevels does not request location, contacts, camera, microphone, or all-files access, and never will.
What Google collects separately
If you install from Google Play, Google collects its own data about installs, purchases and crashes under its privacy policy, not this one. Crash reports and performance data that Google Play shows the developer are aggregated and do not identify you. This is the same for every app on the Play Store, and there is nothing BeatLevels adds to it.
Children
BeatLevels is not directed at children and collects nothing from anyone, including children.
